Frequently Asked Questions View all FAQs
How do you order the correct replacement parts?

Before ordering replacement parts, make sure you have the fan model and serial number.

Where can I find instructions to wire a motor on my fan?

The nameplate of the motor includes a wiring diagram. Wiring diagrams can also be found beneath the motor image in our Buy Parts section. Simply click the wiring diagram icon to view it.

Can I install a thermostat?

Yes, but only if the thermostat has a simple on/off operation. Please note: if the thermostat varies the amount of voltage delivered, it will damage the motor and void the warranty.

Can I install my whole house fan vertically?

Comfort Cooler (CC) series whole-house fans may be mounted vertically, however, the AS and CSS shutters will not function properly in the vertical position. We do not carry a ceiling shutter for vertical installation. Vertical installation instructions.

General Information

Can I install a thermostat?

Yes, but only if the thermostat has a simple on/off operation. Please note: if the thermostat varies the amount of voltage delivered, it will damage the motor and void the warranty.

Why is my fan running in the wrong direction?

A fan will rotate in the wrong direction when a Triangle Engineering motor has been installed in a fan from another manufacturer. Our motors only work on fans manufactured by Triangle Engineering. Look for the nameplate to identify the correct manufacturer.

Portable Fans

How do you order the correct replacement parts?

Before ordering replacement parts, make sure you have the fan model and serial number.

My fan will start, then run a couple of minutes then shut off.

This is rarely a problem with a motor. Ensure there is proper voltage going to the fan with a volt meter. Check to see if someone has chained pulleys on the fan. Another possible solution is a faulty fan blade.

Troubleshooting

Why is my fan running in the wrong direction?

A fan will rotate in the wrong direction when a Triangle Engineering motor has been installed in a fan from another manufacturer. Our motors only work on fans manufactured by Triangle Engineering. Look for the nameplate to identify the correct manufacturer.

Why is the motor humming and not starting?

Check to see if the blade and motor shaft turn freely. Check for adequate intake area and exhaust area. If these checks do not stop the humming, the motor most likely needs to be replaced.

My fan will start, then run a couple of minutes then shut off.

This is rarely a problem with a motor. Typically, the issue is with excessive intake restriction or excessive exhaust restriction. Read more about excessive intake or excessive exhaust restrictions.

The fan cannot be started on its own but can be started with a stick.

Generally, this happens when the motor reaches the end of its life. It also can be low voltage supplied to the fan. Check to ensure there is voltage at the motor. Check if the blade and motor turn freely.

I pressed the reset button on the motor but nothing happens.

Check for adequate voltage at the motor. Check if the blade and motor can turn freely.

The motor is running the fan in the wrong direction.

If this is a three-phase motor, simply reverse two of the three phases to reverse the motor direction. If this is a single-phase motor, see the wiring diagram on the side of the motor for reversing instructions. If this is a replacement motor on a barrel fan, check the fan label to ensure it is a Triangle Engineering fan. Many times our motors run in the opposite direction from other manufacturers.

Fan does not operate

Possible causes: faulty switch, defective motor, no power. Corrective actions: replace the switch, replace the motor, check to see if power cord is plugged in.

Problem: insufficient airflow

Possible causes: loose belts, pulley or fan blade, defective motor or no power. Corrective actions: Tighten the belts and clean guards.

Problem: squealing, slapping or whining noises while operating

Possible causes: loose or worn belts, defective motor bearings and/or defective fan bearings

Whole House Fans

How loud are your fans?

Our belt drive fans are constructed to be some of the quietest in the industry. The larger the fan, the lower the pitch, the quieter it runs.

Can I install a speed control for my whole house fan?

No, the standard motors provided in whole house fans are not suitable for speed control. This will damage the motor and void the warranty.

Should I get a regular or a no-cut joist shutter?

The regular shutter will be better for airflow, however, this is not practical for some installations. Check the building codes in your area (some do not allow the joist to be cut).

How much room do I need between the blade and the roof?

You need 1.5 times the blade diameter between the blade and any obstruction. For example, a 30″ diameter blade will require 45.”

Can I change my 1/3 hp to 1/2 hp motor?

No, our blades are designed specifically for the horsepower of the motor provided. To change horsepower you will need to change the blade, pulleys, motor and belt. You will also need to recalculate your exhaust area.

Should I buy a Comfort Cooler or Comfort Aide whole house fan?

We recommend the belt drive Comfort Cooler (CC) whole-house fan because they are quieter. Comfort Aide attic fans are less expensive and smaller, but louder. When making the decision remember this is an appliance you will use for many years.

Where can I buy an insulated shutter cover?

Effective whole house fan insulated covers are available on the market. However, we do not manufacture nor provide insulated covers.

My fan will start, then run a couple of minutes then shut off.

This is rarely a problem with a motor. Typically, the issue is with excessive intake restriction or excessive exhaust restriction. Read more about excessive intake or excessive exhaust restrictions.
